An Afternoon of Introductions & Insights!

A few of our TEDxYouth@TampaBay 2011 presenters got together on Friday afternoon at St. Pete College- Seminole, to watch some TED Talks together, and learn some on stage tips and tricks from event emcee, Kellie Lightbourn .  It was a great opportunity for presenters to get a first hand look at our great venue, to meet one another and to shake off some pre-event jitters.  It also gave some of them a better idea of how to better give voice to their own vision and insights on November 19th.  It was a great appetizer for the main entree in a couple of weeks!

TEDxYouth@TampaBay Welcomes Jacob Rice: The Shoegiver of Tampa!

TEDxYouth@TampaBay is delighted to announce 15 year old Jacob Rice, aka  “the Shoegiver of Tampa”  as a presenter at our 2011 event.

Jacob  founded Shoe Giver of Tampa (SGOT) in 2006 when he was just 10 years old, after learning that children in his community didn’t have properly fitting shoes, and that many had never owned a new pair of shoes.  He was looking for something to do that could make a difference, and this seemed like a very basic way to make a big impact.

Jacob believed that if children had new shoes that fit correctly, and were comfortable, they would gain more pride, and confidence.  Since then, Jacob has distributed over 1300 pairs of shoes to young people locally and internationally.  Jacob’s been interviewed by CNNABC Action News and others, about his efforts.

Jacob’s message is a simple one, but also an powerful one in the most basic humanitarian sense:  “Every child deserves a new pair of shoes“.

We’re glad Jacob’s bringing his warmth and compassion to TEDxYouth@TampaBay 2011!

Elizabeth Baker Brings Suitcases of Sound to TEDxYouth@TampaBay!

A musical artist in every sense of the word, Elizabeth Ann Baker brings her unique synthesis of classical and electronic music to TEDxYouth@TampaBay on November 19.

Ms. Baker studied piano with Dr. Luis Sanchez, Carolyn McGovern, Eileen Mattioli, Andrew McCardle, and currently studies with Jeff Donovick. She studied Classical Guitar Performance with Edward Lugo and Mark Switzer at Florida Southern College. In addition, she studied music theory with Rita Fandrich at Florida Southern College as well as with Dr. Vernon Taranto and Jeff Donovick at Saint Petersburg College. Miss Baker has performed in master classes on classical guitar for Jason Vieaux and Dr. Stephen Robinson.

Drawing influences from everyday events and personal experience, Baker uses her compositions as a means of expressing a myriad of emotions and ideals. During her last year of high school and first year of college, she regularly composed responsorial psalms for Sunday Mass at Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic Church.

In 2005 Baker began experimenting within the electronic music medium. Employing techniques and merging characteristics from all her studies in functional tonality, pantonal music, chance, field recordings, eastern philosophies, analog synthesis, spoken word and other various genres; Baker has created a sound that is a skillful in its balance and unique in its sound.

As a composer, Baker views her works as a series of musical paintings and collections as a feature in a gallery. Each piece has multiple micro and macro meanings from the composer’s perspective; however, it is intended that, in addition to the predilections outlined by the composer in the program notes, each audience member experiences the work and it’s applicable emotion relevant to their life and experience of the music.

Ever committed to music education and community involvement Baker is frequently featured as a guest speaker in local grade schools, retirement communities, and recreation centers. In September of 2011, St. Petersburg College featured a concert of sixty-five minutes of her solo piano compositions. Baker currently performs around the state and country in a solo electronic project (also as a duo with live drums by Paul Proco) under the pseudonym Suitcases of Sound.
