Themed Positive Disruption, TEDxChange 2013 speakers will challenge preconceived ideas, spark discussion, engage leaders and shed light on new perspectives. Broadcast live from Seattle, Washington and hosted by Melinda Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, TEDxChange will explore how disruption can be a catalyst for change, challenging old assumptions, igniting conversations, activating authorities and exposing new possibilities.

As TEDxChange looks at positive disruption from a national and international perspective, we here at TEDxYouth@TampaBayChange will add our regional voices to the conversation with these local speakers:

Elissa Nauful is the founder and CEO of BallywhoSocial, a nationwide company that utilizes its revolutionary business model to directly address the increasing and timely need for social media services for a variety of industries, individuals, and entities—regardless of size or location. Her strategy combines marketing with social media to increase a client’s buzz through organic, grassroots expansion.

Paul Stonebridge is the Teen Services Manager for the Pasco County Library System. He coordinates programming and large events, such as the annual Battle of the Bands and Anime Convention, for those in sixth grade through college. He also manages the Library System’s social networking endeavors, reaching out to citizens on more than a dozen targeted pages.

Joel Lopez is the managing director of 2Z Consulting, working with emerging companies in all forms and sizes, from true startups to larger technology companies.  He is also the organizer of Bar Camp Tampa Bay, Code Camp and Ignite Tampa Bay.

Theme: Positive Disruption

“Disruption” typically represents conflict, chaos, and potential danger, and is usually discouraged. But disruption can be a positive and sometimes vital catalyst for change. As TEDxChange looks at positive disruption from a national and international perspective, we here at TEDxYouth@TampaBayChange will add our regional voices to the conversation with local speakers and an opportunity for deep discussion among attendees.

To solve the most intractable challenges in health and development, we need positive disruption. It is the path to true progress.

TEDxChange Speakers

Melinda Gates: Host
Melinda Gates is co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Along with Bill Gates, she shapes and approves the foundation’s strategies, reviews results, and sets the overall direction of the organization. Melinda will host TEDxChange from the Gates Foundation campus in Seattle, Washington.

Cathleen Kaveny: Religion, tradition, and modernity
Cathleen Kaveny is an American legal scholar and theologian. She is a John P. Murphy Foundation Professor of Law and Theology at Notre Dame Law School, and is currently a visiting professor at Princeton University.

Halimatou Hima: Investing in girls
Halimatou Hima is a Masters in Public Policy candidate at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. Following an internship in the Women & Population Division at the United Nations Foundation, she worked in the Child Protection Division at the United Nations in her home country of Niger (UNICEF).

Roger Thurow: Shifts in agriculture
Roger Thurow joined the Chicago Council in January 2010 after three decades at the Wall Street Journal. For 20 years, he was a foreign correspondent based in Europe and Africa.

Salim Shekh and Sikha Patra: Vaccine advocates
We will show a trailer from the feature film Revolutionary Optimists, about how children are saving lives in the slums of Calcutta. We will then invite Salim and Sikha, two of the children featured prominently in the film, to join onstage for Q&A

TEDxYouth@TampaBay , in collaboration with Pasco County Public Libraries, is hosting TEDxYouth@TampaBayLive,  a taste of  TED 2013 , free and open to the public, on  February 27th at 2 pm, at the Land O’Lakes Public Library, at 2818 Collier Pkwy in Land O’ Lakes.

Our annual TEDxYouth@TampaBay events showcase the voice and vision of  Tampa Bay area thinkers and doers under 30. Our TEDxYouth@TampaBayLive event is an opportunity to experience a full scale TED event – a sort of variety show of ideas that covers a broad range of topics and insights.

The springtime TED Conference is a 4 day event  held annually in California. The  February 27 Livestream opportunity to view some of TED 2013 brings TED Talks to people around the globe, including right here in Tampa Bay.  The theme of TED 2013 is The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered. A  look at the line up at TED gives some sense of the depth and breadth of the genre, which includes science, business, the arts and the global issues facing our world, giving viewers an opportunity to “ascend to a 30,000-foot view, where we see, to our astonishment, an intricately interconnected whole.”

Today, TED is best thought of as a global community  welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world.  Learning is for Everyone and Pasco County Libraries is pleased to add Land O’ Lakes to that global community.

Arnold, a FIRST team alumni,  made  headlines this past summer, after being disciplined by the University of Central Florida for developing a registration enhancement web service called “U Could Finish.” Later, UCF retroactively improved their website with features similar to the ones Arnold employed.

In tribute to FIRST teams everywhere and in celebration of having the courage of our convictions, we share for you here, the words of Tim Arnold.

Our 2012 event emcee, Matthew Temmer, shared his story with TEDx recently, giving us a lovely opportunity to share his TEDxYouth@TampaBay 2012 intro here.
