10 year old Milo Cress is on a mission. His goal?
“… reduce the use and waste of plastic straws that go into our landfill, and to encourage restaurants to adopt an “offer-first policy,” says Milo told the Christian Science Monitor recently.
Milo was concerned about the impact of plastic straws in landfills - According to Simply Straws, more than 500 million straws – not including the ones attached to beverage boxes -are used in the US every day. That comes out to nearly 40,000 straws used by the average American in his or her lifetime, adding up to a lot of unnecessary plastic in landfills and as litter.
Milo has managed to generate a lot of interest in his campaign. He started his own social media campaign – Be Straw Free – and in the last year and a half, he has met with the mayor of Burlington and members of Congress, spoken at conferences nationwide and persuaded the National Restaurant Association to recognize “offer-first” as a best practice.
